Renewing the Mind
Spiritual Growth
Renewing our mind is one of the most important activities. You do things because you think things. If you want to do something different, you have to think something different. The goal is to change what you think and believe and line it up with what God believes and thinks. This is the first step in kingdom living; renewing your mind.
How does one renew the mind? Think of the mind as a library and your thoughts are a bunch of books, on a shelf, which are comprised of your experiences and beliefs. These resources control what you do. The books on your shelves are sometimes damaged, so they must be removed and replaced in that space, with another book.
Likewise, you must remove wrong thinking and replace one thought with another. You get rid of the damaged belief and replace it with God’s thoughts on the matter. That is renewing the mind.
“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing, you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” Romans 12:12
Your brain is not in charge. The mind controls the brain, not the other way around, so don’t focus on your anatomy but on your thought process. The mind is so much in control that some thoughts such as stress, worry, fear, anger and unforgiveness are proven to be toxic and actually cause damage to the physical brain.
Your thoughts or mind are in control. Mind your mind. Make it come into alignment with the word of God.
When a toxic or harmful thought tempts you to meditate on it, you tell it, “No, no, that is not my thought!“ and say something that the word says, instead. Never leave a vacuum of thought. Empty space is never truly empty; it always has something in its place. You get to choose what to think.
“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ.”
1 Corinthinians 10:5
You can control your mind; you can renew your mind! God would not have asked you to do something that wasn’t possible.
“Remember, “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.” Phillipians 4:13 and
“Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who is in the world. “1 John 4:4 You can do it because the power to do so lives in you!
Want peace? The word says, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. What you have learned and received and heard and seen in me—practice these things, and the God of peace will be with you.”
